  • Jul 23, 2010 - Pensacola, Florida, United States - As tropical storm Bonnie approaches the gulf, work on cleaning up the oil spill has been put on hold. With tropical storm Bonnie approaching, hundreds of workers and more than a dozen vessels will begin moving from the Deepwater Horizon blowout site Friday, stopping work on the long-awaited final stoppage of the well for more than a week. The decision to begin the evacuation was made late Thursday by retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the national incident commander, after concluding that Tropical Storm Bonnie would likely hit the site with winds above 40 mph on Saturday morning. A tropical storm watch was issued early Friday for the northern Gulf Coast from Destin, Fla., to Morgan City, La., the Associated Press reported. • Jun 21, 2008 - Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia - The Alice Springs Telegraph Station Historical Reserve marks the original site of the first European settlement in Alice Springs. Established in 1872 to relay messages between Darwin and Adelaide, it is the best preserved of the twelve stations along the Overland Telegraph Line. The site was first recorded by surveyor William Mills in March 1871, who was in search of a suitable route for the Overland Telegraph Line through the MacDonnell Ranges. Construction of the Telegraph Station began in November 1871. The township of Alice Springs obtained its name from the water hole a short distance to the east of the Station buildings. The Telegraph Station operated for 60 years, after which time the buildings served as a school and 'the Bungalow' for Aboriginal children. During WWII parts of the Station were used by the Army. The Station was protected as a Historical Reserve in 1963, and a number of stone buildings have now been restored. These buildings house furnishings and artifacts from the early 1900s and are preserved as a historic interpretive display. (Credit Image: © Marianna Day Massey/ZUMA Press)

  • AAustralia's Finke Desert Race is a legendary event, testing man and machine. Since 1976 on the Queen's birthday weekend (a three day weekend in the middle of June) the 'there and back' challenge from Alice Springs to the Finke River (believed to be the oldest river in the world at 350 millions years). Started by a group of local die-hard motorbike riders, now over 500 Australian competitors, race a 284 mile course on some of the world's toughest terrains and harshest climates. King of the Desert, is awarded to fastest outright time. Originally a bikes only affair, now cars and off-road buggies join the madness. 2008 Kings of the Desert for Cars are Dave Fellows, Andrew Kittle and Jason Adami in record time of 3hrs 39mins and repeating winner for Bikes: Ben Grabham. • Dec 19, 2007 - Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia - Australia's 460,000 Aborigines make up about two percent of its 20m population. They are consistently the country's most disadvantaged group. At the roughly 18 communities surrounding the town of Alice Springs, many social problems exist among the 3,000 Aborigines living there, with high rates of alcohol abuse, child abuse, and domestic violence. Aborigines continue to live in Third-World conditions in a First-World country despite a government drive to improve their lives. Although millions of dollars have been poured in, little has changed in over a decade. One Aboriginal person dies an alcohol-related death every 38 hours in the Northern Territory. In August, Alice Springs became a dry town, in an effort to stunt the abuse of alcohol, but little has changed in the wake of the ban. The government has also started quarantining the welfare funds of the Aboriginal population, so that the money can be spent only on food and necessities. Even after 40 years of landmark voting, when Aborigines were first recognized as full Australian citizens, countless 'Town Camps' and remote communities are still marked as blank on many maps. For now, what many call home is a littered patch of dirt on the outskirts of town, where feral dogs wander through thousands of empty beer cans. Hope for change seems as though it is a distant mirage. Newly elected Australian leader Kevin Rudd publicly apologized to indigenous Aborigines for past indignities on Feb. 13th, 2008. • Jun 18, 2008; Gulf of Mexico, USA; President George W. Bush has urged Congress to lift the ban on offshore oil drilling and that Congress allow drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, or ANWR, clear the way for more refineries and encourage efforts to recover oil from shale in areas such as the Green River Basin of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. REP Presidential nominee John McCain stated in his campaign earlier this week, 'We have proven oil reserves of at least 21 billion barrels in the United States, but a broad federal moratorium stands in the way of energy exploration and production. And I believe it is time for the federal government to lift these restrictions and to put our own reserves to use.' Opponents of offshore drilling say it would harm aquatic ecosystems by eroding wetlands, contaminating the water with chemicals, polluting the air, killing fish and dumping waste. • May 08, 2006; New Orleans, LA, USA; Residents are now allowed to return to New Orleans' lower 9th Ward. Mayor Ray Nagin says if water tests come back clean, people can go back to their homes and get trailers delivered. Sewer, water and power can now support about 85 percent of the homes. The return comes with less than a month to go before the start of the 2006 hurricane season. Damage from Hurricane Katrina is still apparent in the Lower 9th Ward with piles of debris and ruined cars lining the streets. The levee breach has dried up, but the area remains relatively unchanged ten months after the storm. Grass and weeds grow among the foundations of homes that were washed to the next block. • Mar 20, 2006 - Beverly Hills, California, USA - Gov. Schwarzenegger's drive to raise tens of millions of dollars for his reelection has set off a backlash by organized labor, with unions trying to ensure that his hunt for money remains a prime source of political trouble. In Beverly Hills on Monday, unions held their first major protest of the year against the Republican governor's collection of campaign money. About 200 nurses, bus drivers, school clerks and other union members marched outside a private Schwarzenegger reception and dinner for donors, who paid up to 00,000 for seats near the governor and his guest speaker, U.S. Sen. McCain (R-Ariz.). As Schwarzenegger was ensconced with top supporters inside the Beverly Hilton, sign-waving protesters shouted from the sidewalks outside at rush-hour traffic on Wilshire and Santa Monica boulevards.

  • Aug 31, 2004; Los Angeles, CA, USA; Kabbalah - a body of mystical teachings of rabbinical origin, often based on an esoteric interpretation of the Hebrew Scriptures has been deemed the trendiest religion in Hollywood. Stars like Madonna and Britney Spears have helped catapult this once obscure religion into the limelight. Many celebs wear a red string associated with the religion on their left wrist, which is said to help safeguard them from negative glances and resentful looks from others. Newly elected Australian leader Kevin Rudd publicly apologized to indigenous Aborigines for past indignities. • Australia's Finke Desert Race is a legendary event, testing man and machine. • Dec 27, 2006; Los Angeles, CA, USA; US growers produce nearly US 5 billion worth of marijuana annually, making the illegal drug the country's largest cash crop, bigger than corn and wheat combined, an advocate of medical marijuana use said in a study released on Monday. The report, conducted by Jon Gettman, a public policy analyst and former head of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, also concluded that five US states produce more than US billion worth of marijuana apiece: California, Tennessee, Kentucky, Hawaii and Washington. California's production alone was about US 3.8 billion, according to Gettman, who waged an unsuccessful six-year legal battle to force the government to remove marijuana from a list of drugs deemed to have no medical value. Tom Riley, a spokesman for the US Office of National Drug Control Policy, said he could not confirm the report's conclusions on the size of the country's marijuana crop. But he said the government estimated overall US illegal drug use at US 00 billion annually. Pictured: A man smoking a marijuana joint. Mandatory Credit: Photo by Marianna Day Massey/ZUMA Press. (

  • Feb 27, 2006; Mojave, CA, USA; Tehachapi-Mojave Wind Resource Area -The Tehachapi Pass is one of the world's largest producer of wind-generated electricity. The more than 5,000 wind turbines in the Tehachapi-Mojave wind resource area of Kern County generate approximately 1.3 Terawatt-hours (1,300,000,000 kWh) per year. This is enough electricity to meet the residential needs of more than 500,000 Southern Californians or nearly one million Europeans. Collectively the wind turbines generate electricity much like a conventional power plant except that their fuel - the wind - is both free and inexhaustible. Since they are open-air power plants the term wind power plant or wind power station is more descriptive than the term, wind farm, sometimes used. The wind power plants sell their electricity to Southern California Edison. The utility then distributes the electricity as it would that from any of its own power plants. On a moderately windy day Tehachapi's wind turbines will meet the needs of the entire Antelope Valley and export electricity to Los Angeles. By producing electricity cleanly California's wind power plants reduce pollutant gases that contribute to smog, acid rain, and global warming. Each year Tehachapi's wind power plants prevent the emission of more than 3 billion (3,000 million) pounds of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, particulates, and carbon dioxide that would otherwise be produced. Wind power plants produce about 1% of the state's electricity. As a state with 10% of the nation's population and the world's seventh largest economy, California uses a staggering amount of electricity. California emits nearly as much global warming gases as the entire nation of France. Mandatory Credit: Photo by Marianna Day Massey/ZUMA Press. (
